Alice Cary Risley was born in Wilmington, Ohio, on this day in 1847. Her family moved to New Orleans, where she began nursing in the service at 15 years old. Her father joined the Union Army, and her husband, Samuel A. Risley, whom she married, in St. Louis, Missouri, was a former Union soldier. Riley was the only surviving member of the National Association of Civil War Nurses, which dissolved at the time of her death in 1939. The picture is of a veteran kissing Mrs. Riley on the forehead.
